Kerry Kean “New River Guitarism”

December 4th, 2009

Kerry Kean’s newest CD, New River Guitarism, conjures up images of the beauty of nature, the passion of passing time and the love of family and friends.  Inspired by his adventures rock climbing, visiting and dreaming at the New River in West Virginia, Keen brings to life through his music the emotions generated by the rolling rapids, soaring vistas, and natural beauty of one of the Midwest’s most intriguing natural landscapes.

An eclectic fusion of folk, jazz, rock and the blues, Kean brings several styles together to create a solid musical offering that instrumental music lovers of all genres will be pleased with.  Using contrasting styles, musical moods and tempos, the CD starts strong with the beautiful New River Suite.  The two movements, White Water and Drifting conjure up images of swirling water, powerful waves and soothing tides.  Imagine the exhilaration of white water rafting, then relaxing with loved ones on the river’s bank.

The strength of the album is definitely Kean’s skill as a guitar virtuoso, his ability to bring his instrument to life while transmitting images to the mind of the listener are extraordinary.  His ability as a master musician is illustrated quite clearly on songs such as, Ride Gypsy Cowboy and Grandma’s Typewriter.

A Song For Melody, written for the artist’s wife is a gentle and subtle tune that expresses a deep and timeless love.  Several of the songs are inspired by Kean’s children as well as friends who have made appearances in his life and impacted him greatly.  Sarah and Lindsey and the Snail Stampede is one of my favorites; I can almost see the snails racing ever so slowly to an imaginary finish line.

I love the fast paced songs Jig as well as my ultimate favorite, Aliens Came and Took The Cow, She’s With Elvis Now.  Kean clearly knows exactly who he is as an artist and I find the album clear in purpose and visually stunning in his ability to create a moving picture show in the mind with his music.

Music lovers will not be disappointed by picking up Kerry Kean’s, New River Guitarism, I’ve got a copy stashed away for my own brother for Christmas!
